ATA RANGI - Martinborough

Martinborough is a special area and part of a larger area known as the Wairarapa a good hours’ drive from Wellington over the Rimutaka Hills.

Clive Paton converted a stony 12 acre home paddock into vines in 1980 and was one of a handful of people who pioneered grape growing in the area. Today, Ata Rangi is a thriving winery under the care of Clive and his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is considered one of the very best New World Pinot Noirs and has many international wine awards to prove it. In addition to his love of winemaking, Clive is a passionate environmentalist and has won awards in recent years for his Bush Block site where he raises and nurtures native trees and provides a safe habitat for native ferns and birds. Clive was also was of the founding members of Sustainable Wine Making New Zealand in 1997. Taking meticulous care of the vineyard by companion planting to ward off pests and provide soil enrichment by composting and planting wildflowers between the rows of vines Clive manages to get the very best from his vines.

Pinot Noir needs great care and attention and it is important to ‘build’ the palate by providing layers of flavour and texture. Clive is a master craftsman at this.

PINOT NOIR 2006:

A dream vintage. On the nose this wine has aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and rose scents. On the palate, the same elements are apparent with fine tannins, integrated oak and a promise, if carefully cellared of a good ten + years. This is a stunning wine and a ‘must’ for any serious Pinot Noir lover.

Case of 12 bottles - £348.00

Case of 6 bottles - £181.00

Celebre 2005:

Ata Rangi Celebre wineA very special wine which dates back to 1986 when the first vintage came on the market. Since then, it has enjoyed much popularity and each year the percentages vary according to what varieties that year produce the best. This year the blend was composed of Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc 35%; Syrah 35% and Merlot 30%. The wine spent 17 months in French oak barriques. On the nose are fragrant spices of cloves, cinnamon and cardamom enhanced further by the plummy richness of Merlot and Syrah’s sweet, freshly cracked black pepper characters. There is also a suggestion of sweet tobacco, the rich aroma of olive and pine nut tapenade and the toast aromas of of the French oak barriques. Can age well over the next five years.

Case of 12  bottles - £198.00

Case of 6 bottles - £106.00
