GILLMAN Vineyard - Matakana
A small specialist winery owned by Toby Gillman producing its first vintage in 2002 . Matakana is about an hour’s drive north east of Auckland. The area of Matakana comes under one of the sub-regions of Auckland. The area is warm but has a reasonably high rainfall and a degree of humidity. The vines do need to be controlled as they can become fertile and vigorous and given the humidity issue, a good spray regime is imperative . There is a high percentage of clay so the vineyards
need to be site specific.
Only 912 bottles of wine were produced by Toby in 2003. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec and was aged in French oak for two years before it was released. The nose and palate display rich, spicy notes with firm fruit of plum and blackberry with some earthy notes. The tannins are fine and seamless and the oak is well integrated. This wine has an ageing potential of some eight to ten years but is approachable now.
Case of 6 bottles - £180.00
