MATAKANA: approximately one hour’s drive north of Auckland, this premium, but small wine producing district produces ripe, robust, Bordeaux style reds including Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The local growers partly credit the district’s pinkish-red iron-rich granulated free-draining soils for the flavour intensity they achieve in their grapes.
