NELSON: often referred to as “sunny Nelson” in that it boasts long sunshine hours and some of the cleanest air in New Zealand! Both Aotea and Redwood Valley are part of this ‘stable’ and are certified as part of SUSTAINABLE WINEMAKING NEW ZEALAND. The family who own the vineyards and make this wine were motivated for the following reasons: Firstly, they are a winery which is constantly looking for ways to improve their wines and the move towards sustainability was a natural progression. Many of the requirements for the programme were things they were already doing in the vineyard and the winery. Additionally, they were doing many of the things off their own back which gave them a head start for example, using lambs during the winter months to tidy and restore fertiliser to the vineyard while saving on staff and tractor costs to run mechanical mowers through and, in addition, thus reducing vineyard compaction. The family have been recognised for these things which is a real bonus. This all means extra work involved in having to provide an auditable paper trail both in the vineyard and the winery, mainly in terms of water and power usage monitoring and staff training. Secondly, as the world is now more “green conscious”this practice makes a huge difference and as more developments ensue more willbe put into action.
