New Zealand has come a very long way in a very short time. When I think back to travelling around the Henderson Valley and Kumeu areas in Auckland, most of the wine produced came from
vineyards in those two areas. Then gradually Hawkes Bay and Gisborne became important vine growing areas especially for the Auckland based wineries. The South Island began to open up with massive plantings in
Marlborough of Sauvignon Blanc in particular. This area still prides itself today as the “epi-centre” of this most widely acclaimed grape variety.
Gradually, other areas began to emerge as importantgrape growing centres which were to contribute to the way New Zealand was shaping in its wine production, style and variety of grape plant. Areas such as Nelson, Central Otago and Canterbury/Waipara in the South Island and in the North Island, Martinborough, South Auckland, Waiheke Island and now Northland (see map).
There are at the moment, TEN main VITICULTURAL REGIONS with additional details provided for those regions where we source our wine. In order of size they are (2007 figures):
