STONYRIDGE - Waiheke Island
Stephen White owns and runs this stunning winery with its famous Restaurant.
Set in one of the many sunny valleys on Waiheke Island ( a 45 minute ferry ride from Auckland City) and nestling among vines and olive trees all Stephen’s vines are grown organically and maintained with loving care and devotion. Lavender bushes abound around the property and give the property a Mediterranean feel.
I am very lucky to be given a small allocation each vintage of the Larose, Stephen’s flag ship wine. This is one of the most noted wines among the world of collectors and wine aficionados. The Larose is the crème de la crème of the collection and is a wine made for the long haul. 2006 was an exceptional year with temperatures during January of 30 deg. Waiheke Island lies in the rain belt of Auckland and has very warm, sunny days during the summer months. Because it had a myriad of cafes
and fine beaches and is so close to the city, many hundreds of holiday makers and day-trippers, as well as the yachting fraternity, visit to Island to enjoy its beauty and the many activities it has to offer.
LAROSE 2006:
is made for the long haul and will be best enjoyed from 2010 to 2020. It is densely coloured with a rich, youthful blackcurrant aroma and hints of plum, herb and spice. Nothing is spared in the making and the French oak used during for the maturation is used judiciously. Layers of flavour and great structure, this is an amazing wine. It contains all the five varieties that go to make the Bordeaux blend with Cabernet sauvignon the dominant variety. This wine shows
how well Cabernet can perform
