WAIHEKE ISLAND: A unique island lying in the Hauraki Gulf some fifty minutes by ‘quick-cat’ from Auckland City. The Island basks in warm sunshine and lies in the rain shadow of Auckland and is a popular weekend resort for day-trippers and holiday makers as well as the yachting fraternity. It offers fine restaurants, beaches, walking trails and some superb vineyards many of which have restaurants attached. The area produces rich, robust, Bordeaux style reds from low cropping vines grown on old, extremely weathered sedimentary rock littered with very tiny manganese nodules which promote good drainage, minerally character and elegance into the resulting wine.
