WAIPARA: A small, diverse wine district fifty minutes drive north from Christchurch. The area comprises a long, narrow valley which is sheltered by mountains to the east and west. The area itself is undulating and vines can be seen in dispersed with paddocks full of sheep.
The main grape varieties which are grown are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. The resulting wines are naturally balanced from these low-cropping vines which yield intensely flavoured premium quality fruit.
The area experiences long, dry autumns and warm, dry summers. The soils on the flat lands in the central and west of the valley are low-fertility, stony soils; whilst the hillsides on the eastern side of the valley are of limestone-derived clays. In the south of the valley, the soils are of gravelly loams over alluvial sub-soils.
